Reborn, 2019
This mixed-media artwork was inspired by the spirit of resilience, and celebrates the work of Womankind. It draws direct inspiration from the iconic bird that is the signature symbol for Womankind. A rising phoenix that is regenerative and mythical, at the same time resembling a flower unfolding in bloom. With the transformation of industrial metal as a material into a work of art, it evokes fragility yet a deep strength. This work, Reborn, signifies hope.

About the artistMaureen Hoon is a Singapore-born, New York-based artist. Her mixed-media and installation works play with concepts of visual perception and interactivity. Hoon's interests include the intersections of urban environment and nature, hybridity, and diaspora. Her works elude familiar categories of drawing, painting and sculpture. In her artistic practice, Hoon experiments with original techniques and unconventional materials that are assembled and absorbed into the art. She is also a seasoned community organizer and arts administrator with a focus on cross-cultural collaborations and educational projects. Hoon graduated with a Masters from Pratt Institute’s School of Art & Design in 2012.

On resilienceFor me, resilience is a journey, one of personal growth. Through resilience, one can gain confidence in overcoming life's challenges. Our capacity to heal and adapt, is truly astounding. One is able to discover more about one's humanity and the gift of life that keeps giving. As we share our stories of resilience, we can inspire and encourage others in the process. In art, one is able to grasp the profound value of artistic expression by overcoming the odds, and not giving up. Artists understand the important role of resilience as we seek the highest levels of creative expression despite the barriers and constrains embedded within society.
